When it comes to sports bras, you’ve got a lot of options. Whether it’s racerback, zip-front, or high-impact, a good, supportive bra is key for maximizing your training. Perhaps you prefer a minimalist approach and one double-duty piece of activewear. Say hello to long-line sports bras.
A long-line sports bra is a hybrid between a sports bra and a tank top, says Natalya Vasquez, CPT, a certified personal trainer, health coach, and founder of Bridal Bootcamp San Diego. “It has a built-in bra but extends beyond the rib cage to the mid-torso or waist and comes in a variety of styles like racerback, tank, halter, V-neck, and scoop neck.” Basically all activewear brands have a long-line sports bra or two, so you can shop them at Lululemon, Athleta, Amazon, Sweaty Betty, and more.

A long-line sports bra also provides more torso coverage than a traditional bra and is often worn in lieu of a sports bra and tank top combination, adds Vasquez. That means you can go from the gym to the grocery store without having to change or add additional layers, she adds. (Fewer pieces in your bag and in your laundry. Score!)
Meet the expert: Natalya Vasquez, CPT, is a certified personal trainer, health coach, and founder of Bridal Bootcamp San Diego.
And while there’s nothing worse than your sports bra shifting while exercising, the additional fabric in a long-line sports bra actually prevents it from rolling up, says Vasquez. Plus, many long-line sports bras come with removable padding, which allows you to control the support level, she adds.
But, there are limitations to keep in mind. Many long-line bras are designed for low- to medium-impact activities like yoga, Pilates, walking, and some forms of resistance training, and may not offer enough support for high-impact activities like running, dancing, or kickboxing, especially if you wear a C cup or larger, says Vasquez. As a result, it’s crucial to find a long-line sports bra for your specific needs.

How To Choose The Best Long-Line Sports Bra
Support: Just like any bra, a long-line sports bra is built to support activity, says Vasquez. The bra should fit securely around your body and bust, and you don’t want any gaps or overflow. If you have a large chest, Vasquez also suggests wide or adjustable straps or racerback styles which can provide more support.
Type of workout: The right bra really does depend on your workout, says Vasquez. “For low-impact activities like yoga and Pilates, you would need significantly less bra support than moderate-impact activities like fast paced walking and resistance training, or high-impact exercise like running, bootcamp, and dancing,” she explains. “Breast support during exercise is extremely important for women because if you’re uncomfortable during your workout, you’ll be less likely to exercise.”
Features: There are many different features of long-line sports bras to match your body and preferences. Whether it’s removable cups, wide straps, or UPF sun protection, pick a style that’s comfortable for you and easy to use.
Style: Some long-line sports bras have lower necklines while others have more coverage, says Vasquez. “Select a complimentary style that you’re both comfortable and confident in,” she explains. Wardrobe malfunctions are a distant memory when you find the right one.
Fabric: Logistically speaking, the materials in a long-line sports bra make a big difference in how you can wear it. Opt for sweat-wicking, breathable, quick-dry fabric to keep you cool and comfortable and go for a four-way stretch material if you plan to move and groove in your top. Keep in mind that compression material can be wonderfully supportive on, but a wrestling match to get on and off.
